The peaks Mercedario (6770 m), Polaco (6000 m), La Mesa (6200 m) , Alma Negra (6120 m) and La Ramada (6400 m), surround one of the most stunning valleys of San Juan: Colorado Valley, that with its glaciers, penitents fields, waterfalls and wildlife, is a place of unparalleled beauty .
The journey begins in a 4x4 vehicle, to Santa Ana National Gendarmerie site, from where the tour begins.
During the excursion:
- We wade the Colorado River to Pirca Polaco, base camp in Colorado Valley.
- We go to the valley of the upper Colorado river where we will have one of the most stunning views of mount Mercedario.
- We continue to the base of glacier Italia, at 4100m, majestic glacier on the slopes of mount La Mesa.
- We visit the Salto Frio, an impressive semi frozen waterfall, that seems to be dancing with the wind.
- Finally we cross the Colorado Valley to La Morrenas, base of South Wall of Mount Mercedario, at 4200 meters.
Only then we return to Santa Ana, where the 4x4 trucks are waiting for us to return Barreal.

The walk starts at Las Hornillas de Arriba, towards the Valley of Colorado, culminating in a natural balcony at 4600 meters, in the heart of the Andes, where we spotted six towering peaks: Mercedario (6770 m.), Polaco (6000 m.), Mesa (6100 m.), Alma Negra (6200 m.), Ramada North (6300 m.) and Ramada South (6250 m.).
The first 80 km. from Barreal are done in a 4x4 vehicle, until the place Las Hornillas Arriba, where the trek begins.
The first stage is the climb to the slope of Corredores. The next morning the road continues along the banks of the Colorado River to the base camp. At dawn on the third day we ascend to the natural balcony at 4580 m., from where we can see six stunning peaks over 6000 m., in one of the most remote places of the Andes.
